It was a big weekend in the Homan house. G&G were here for major renovations... those included transitioning Chase into a big boy bed/room and starting to work on our little spicy girl's room. In the lead up, I have been doing a lot of patching and repairs to settlement cracks, freshening paint, re-doing some stripes in Chase's room, and ordering all the big boy bed items. It was also quite an adventure in mattress buying as I learned about all the disgusting chemicals found in today's mattresses which led to weeks of research into organic beds and the eventual purchase of an all-natural organic bed. Finally, we were ready for some roll-up-your-sleeve work.... at 6.5 months pregnant.
We started with Chase's room. We broke down his crib as a not-so-silently shed some tears that our baby is not a baby anymore. Thank god we have one on the way or it might have been more dramatic than my hormones could have survived. Once the crib was out, Grantudy and I did a furniture dance and put everything together. We are pretty thrilled with the outcome!
So was Chase when he saw the construction truck sheets I have been saving since I found them on Potty Barn clearance months ago. I was waiting for this moment, and his reaction did NOT disappoint. The child was in love with his bed! The real test would be at nap time to see if he stayed put and actually slept after his new found freedom.
That was the easy part of the renovations. Next up with Spicy's room-- specifically the stencil I have been drooling over for months. I knew what her room would look like since we heard "It's a girl" at our 20-week ultrasound. I re-read the directions one last time and my heart sunk. I had prepped the room wrong. Long story short, I thought I was supposed to paint the wall aqua and stencil in white... but it was actually the reverse. After some debate about giving up or doing the reverse colors, Gramps stepped to the plate and offered to paint it back. 2 coats of white and 24 hours later, we were ready to finally stencil.
The stencil took about 5 hours. Though Grantudy is a master stencil-er from years ago, she was too scared to give it a shot, so instead I was powering through, with my big belly. This was after just being told by my doctor to slow down or she would put me on bed rest. I will slow down tomorrow.. ok?
The final result was so amazing I was just THRILLED! I couldn't wait for Kevin to get the crib put back together against the wall. It is exactly as I pictured. Now I just need to get the curtains hung and decorations up... but all in good time. In the mean time, Grantudy added some whimsical ladybugs for fun.
Aside from all the work in the kids' bedrooms, we also spent some quality time just being with G&G. Grantudy made some cookies with Chase. Chase is quite determined to do things without anyone's help, which led to an avalanche of sprinkles all over the cookies. Martha Stewart we are not. Hope you aren't diabetic! It was sugar shock... but he loved it.
Though G&G had to go back home on Monday, the fun didn't end. Sarah come into town for the night before heading back to Egypt. I begged her to stay a month longer to meet our Spicy girl, but we had to settle for just a good visit this time and she will be back this summer.
Chase loved Sarah and they were immediate buddies drawing trucks at his table. After everyone was in bed, we stayed up so late, talking, laughing, and falling back into step as we have over the past 25 years! Yikes!
